Silicosis - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

June 9, 2009

Silicosis is a fibro-nodular lung disease caused by inhalation of dust containing crystalline silica, which is present in granite, slate and sandstone. Silicosis can be either acute or chronic. Common symptoms include cough, breathlessness, wheezing, digital clubbing, cyanosis, and other symptoms of cor pulmonale. This condition is an occupational hazard for people involved with mining, quarrying, sand blasting, cement and glass manufacturing, masonry, blast furnaces, coal mining and construction work.

The Ayurvedic treatment of silicosis is aimed at treating symptoms and preventing long term complications like chronic bronchitis, cor pulmonale, respiratory failure and lung cancer. Medicines like Shwas-Kuthar-Ras, Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Kantakari-Avaleha, Vasa-Avaleha, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras and Shrung-Bhasma can be used to reduce inflammation in the lungs, and symptoms like cough, breathlessness and wheezing. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose include Pippali (Piper longum), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Bruhat-Kantakari (Solanum indicum), Som (Ephedra vulgaris), Karkatashrungi (Pistichia integerima), Kulingan (Alpimia galangal), Dhatura (Dhatura fastuosa), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa) and Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa).

Medicines like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras and Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras can be used to prevent permanent damage to the lungs and chronic complications like cor pulmonale and lung cancer. Medicines like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta) can be used to boost the immune status of the body. Yashtimadhuk and Pippali, boiled in milk, are given in progressively increasing doses, followed by gradually tapering doses. Repeated such courses are very useful in preventing recurrent infections in the lungs, and help in repairing the damage done to the lungs.

The prognosis of silicosis depends upon the chronicity and severity of lung damage caused by this condition. Prevention is a very important aspect of the management of this condition. Occupational safety standards need to be implemented rigorously in order to prevent this condition and reduce morbidity and mortality.

Should You Go on a Liver Detox?

I’ve read a lot of stuff in recent times about detoxifying the body and a liver detox seemed like just another method of cleansing the body of toxins. Also, having tried a month long detox once I was curious to see if there were any other ways of getting the same results.

I found that doing it with my partner was a great motivation as we were both focused on the same objective and had mutual support. Heck, there’s nothing more soul destroying than trying to keep up a detox program of any kind if the other person is tucking into a nice, tasty dish of something that you’re not supposed to have!

There’s no doubt that the one month I endured without many of the things I’m used to having, felt more like three months. Funny how you miss those everyday things you had before, like a cup of tea, a glass of wine or a fried breakfast. You keep telling yourself that the end justifies the means, and yes a liver detox was part of it, as I abstained from drinking any form of alcohol for a whole month.

I used to enjoy getting home from work and having a glass of wine, and when I wake up in the mornings, drinking a cup of tea is almost an automatic action. But, the advice was to avoid any stimulants like alcohol and tea, and to drink more natural fruit juices prepared in a blender, and of course good old water.

It appears that sometimes people often overlook this last point, because unless your water supply is as pure as you can get it, then you may just be taking a step backward during your liver detox. This is simply because plain old tap water is well, not as plain as you might imagine.

The real fact of the matter is that there are all sorts of contaminants that should not be present for a wide variety of reasons, too many to go through in this article. However, ensuring you drink truly clean water will go some way towards making you feel and look better, when you eventually finish that liver detox.

The Amazing Smart For Life Cookie Diet

The Smart for Life Cookie Diet has provided tremendous weight loss success for thousands of people around the world and the craze looks set to break some amazing records along the way.

It was created by Dr. Sanford Siegal Started in the mid-seventies when we saw that people were failing all too often when trying to lose weight due to a variety of factors. He embarked on research to find a way for people to control their hunger throughout the day and keep a stable metabolism at all times.

As a graduate of the Ohio University in 1956 and then a practicing physician since 1957 Dr. Siegal combined cooking and his proficiency in chemistry to make his patented Smart For Life Cookies.

Dr. Siegal found that weight loss can be promoted easily for most people who suffered with hypothyroidism, a condition thought to cause trouble with the thyroid glands .This was later discovered to be the main cause for the slowdown of a person’s metabolism and hence the increase in weight as a result in some individuals.

Dr. Siegal fashioned a weight loss program that consists of eating up to six cookies a day which is designed to curb hunger pangs that cause people to overeat putting on excess weight. The person is also required to eat one small meal per day of lean meat proteins and vegetables to get a full array of vitamins and minerals required to assist in weight loss regime.

The cookie diet cookies have 90 calories per 24 gram cookie and contain amounts of proteins and amino acids to assist with weight loss. So 6 cookies a day equals a total of only 540 calories (not including the light meal suggested) and limits dramatically the chances of eating too many calories. To add to all this Dr. Siegal has produced a tasty group of shakes and soups using the same dietary program of proteins and amino acids to help restrain hunger.

If you also add an exercise program to the cookie diet consisting of aerobic activities and weight bearing exercises for at least 20 minutes everyday you can expect to very quickly and seamlessly lose the excess weight you have struggled to remove with fad diets in the past.

My research has located many individuals you have been very successful in losing 60 or 70 lbs or even more in some cases over a sustained period on the cookie diet program. Overall I fully recommend Dr Siegal’s cookie diet to anyone looking for an inexpensive approach to weight loss that does not require the use of pills, potions and messy products.

Even better you can find all the latest coupons at coupons-select to make great savings when purchasing the Smart for Life Cookie Diet.

Scientifically Proven Exercises That Can Control High Blood Pressure

Determining the positive effects of exercise as treatment for high blood pressure was proven by a certain study. Two groups of people with high blood pressure were divided into groups and paired according to weight, height and family background with the same medication to maintain their blood pressure at 120/80. The objective was to monitor if there will be changes in the requirements of medications.

The first group was given a daily one-hour session of aerobic exercise. The second group was told to go on with their normal daily routine.

The study disclosed a 20 percent decline in medication at the end of the fourth week and 30 percent on the sixth week on the first group. Conversely, the second group increased the medication requirement by 5 percent on the sixth week.

This only confirms the effectiveness of exercise to lower blood pressure. A regular exercise done moderately develops cardiac output, lessen blood pressure and improves lean body mass.

This is supported by other studies including the Journal of the American Medical Association that blood pressure is reduced by about 9 percent under regular exercise for a period of six or more months.

Regular exercise means doing it five times a week at the least. In like manner, moderate exercise is a long and vigorous routine. An example of moderate exercise is walking from forty to fifty minutes or jogging from twenty to thirty minutes.

There are two types of exercises:

1. Aerobic exercise - Aerobic a nomenclature that literally means “with air”. This type of exercise requires the extended use of the cardiovascular system in moving the oxygen in the blood. Examples are daily walking, swimming and skiing from twenty minutes to one hour.

2. Anaerobic exercise - or “without air” does not necessarily mean that that you will not breathe while doing an exercise but only the usual breathing and not always. This work out increases the normal metabolism but will not exercise the heart and the arteries, albeit for a short period.

Examples are swimming under water and running a 100-yard dash. Although the two examples are vigorous in nature, they only use the energy-yielding materials of the body. It may sound strange but you can swim under water and run without breathing. Other examples are weight-lifting and running for the bus. This exercise temporarily raises blood pressure and should be avoided.

When to exercise?

This is still open to debate. Sociology suggests that it should be in the beginning of the day while it’s at the end of the day for physiology. Since exercise reduces stress and relaxes the mind, physiology is targeting the end of the day when stress is at its peak.

Similarly if you start in the morning, you are opening yourself to a positive outlook. The free hand is yours to choose, as long as you exercise to prevent high blood pressure.

As always, you are advised to consult your doctor before starting an exercise program. Do some stretching and start with a low form of exercise then gradually increase it.

Don’t Use Synthetic Collagen - Your Own Body Can Produce it If Stimulated Properly

Given the option… would you prefer synthetic collagen injections? Or have your own skin stimulated naturally to produce it’s own new collagen and elastin protein skin cells?

Science has come a long way in being able to produce synthetic collagen that is not rejected by our body. Now, I don’t know about you, but the thought of having it injected into my face doesn’t really excite me a lot. How about you?

Not to mention the cost and inconvenience of having the procedure repeated approximately every six to nine months to maintain the anti wrinkle effect.

Most of us want to keep any anti-aging anti-wrinkle costs to a minimum, yet still get a good result. Well, this is now possible thanks to some very clever people in New Zealand. You see, they have discovered a way to convert natural keratin into a new form called functional keratin”(TM)”.

Functional keratin has been scientifically proven to stimulate the re-growth of collagen and elastin protein fibers internally within your dermis. This results in their levels increasing, that helps your skin regain it’s lost structure, strength and elasticity. The benefit to you becomes evident by the removal of fine lines and reduction in wrinkles, leaving you with a smoother more youthful looking complexion.

There’s no doubt the scientific breakthrough in the development of compatible synthetic collagen, will be fantastic for the treatment of burn victims and other medical situations. But, it won’t work if applied topically to your skin from a tube of skin cream.

However, what does work when applied to your skin, is functional keratin it’s cost effective and practical to use. And is the best natural substance available today, that can penetrate your epidermis to make your body produce more collagen and elastin protein cells.

If you want to better moisturize, nourish and improve your skin by reducing dryness and wrinkles, then you should seriously take a look at this new ingredient functional keratin. Synthetic collagen is great for medical applications, but at this stage is not the best most cost effective option as far as daily skin care management goes.

At my website, I discuss more collagen and elastin issues, plus other ingredients that can benefit your facial appearance and skin, that help to give you younger and smoother looking complexion.

Natural Cure For ADHD Kids - How Realistic is This?

Let me ask you another question. How realistic is it to put a child on a stimulant drug which could alter his neural development? How realistic is it to put a child on a drug like Modafinil which has the potential for drug abuse in the patient? The FDA obviously thought it was unrealistic and they have now rejected the use of this drug in children. They know that child ADHD treatment means psychostimulants for the vast majority of people with ADD and ADHD. Just in case you come across this drug, the brand names are Alertec and Provigil. A natural cure for ADHD kids will not get much promotion or massive publicity campaigns but that should not prevent parents from looking at this alternative objectively.

So, let’s get real. Lots of people think that natural cure for ADHD kids means just that and there is no possibility of over dosage or side effects. Wrong! It all depends on the purity of ingredients and how they are processed. When considering any natural product and that could range from a herbal remedy, a homeopathic preparation or simply vitamin supplements, you have to know what exactly is in the bottle, why and how it has been processed and what sort of guarantees come with it. If you cannot reassure yourself on any of these points, then you should steer clear.

If you want to find out about any of the nasty side effects of ADHD meds, just try visiting an ADHD blog. Depends on who is paying for it but even so, you will get a very good feel for the type of problems and side effects of these drugs which also, by the way, are expensive. We are talking about brain (neural) development of children and teenagers. Brain chemistry is a lot more complicated than rocket science! The brain goes on developing till the age of 25. Once you read more on these forums, you will find the following stark realities. Child ADHD treatment with stimulants is causing weight loss and stunted growth which is one reality - admittedly in a small number of cases. Parents then have to double their efforts in providing snacks at all odd hours. Insomnia is a big problem. More pills for that so that the child sleeps and so do the parents. More side effects from the sleeping pills. It seems that the amount of parenting time and effort in making sure that these drugs are even minimally effective is completely out of all proportion!

Why not find a natural cure for ADHD kids which has no side effects and the risks are non-existent? That will leave you plenty of time and energy to devote to parenting itself which is the most important thing for your ADHD child. Most paediatricians know that and some are kind enough to tell the parents ! A natural cure for ADHD kids will never hit the headlines but that is no reason to ignore it. Parents are delighted with the results and can see great improvements in attention, reduction of hyperactivity and much better attention spans. The company offering this product is one of the most reputable in its field and is also approved by the FDA.

Resveratrol and Athletic Performance

Resveratrol, a plant protector found in over 70% of plant species, is being investigated now for its possible benefits to athletes. Studies from France and the United States indicate good results of resveratrol in lab mice. The results in the studies are quite remarkable. The mice were able to sustain running twice the distance that they normally do without showing signs of exhaustion. If it is to be assumed therefore that humans have some of the same genes as mice do, then athletic performance can be strengthened by a hundred percent.

The mice also demonstrated stronger cells, due to the component of resveratrol that allows muscles to oxygenate better. Additionally, muscle Mitochondria, which provides the energy needed by the muscles, is multiplied thus making the muscle more dynamic. Mitochondria in the muscles use up fats in the body to create energy which means fats are also restrained from accumulating.

Aside from the potential vigor it can provide, some preliminary data of other researches show that resveratrol can also be tapped to hamper degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. There are also investigations that it can trigger the activation of a gene that delays the aging process. Another enzyme, sirtuin that is crucial to the delay of the aging process, is kept healthy by resveratrol and this helps in warding off the different signs of getting old, inside and outside our bodies.

Resveratrol and athletic performance then seems to be matched for each other. In keeping yourself strong, you can be physically active for a much longer time. The compound also can control weight gain and can help the body synthesize insulin and glucose better. As a bonus, it also inhibits the replication of the influenza-causing virus, meaning you are virtually immune from getting a cold and coughs.

Judging from the above statements, this may mean that resveratrol can be helpful in the prevention of the top death-causing illnesses the modern society is suffering from. Some of these are caused by too much fat deposited in the body such as cardiovascular ailments, hypertension, and diabetes.

Resveratrol also helps in keeping plates from clotting and blocking cerebral arteries, preventing myocardial infarction, or stroke. The compound has also been found to be helpful in the control of nerve cell damage after a person suffers from a stroke. Since resveratrol can also help in the regeneration of cells, the wonder compound can also be helpful in the prevention of carcinogenic cells.

Resveratrol can be found in red wine, which is probably the reason behind why so many French people can be so healthy so late in their lifetimes. Although most of the studies made on resveratrol are on animals like mice, flies, and worms; and yeasts, there seems to be no reports of harm in the intake of this compound.

The History of Teeth Whitening

The desire for perfectly white teeth is one that has had people throughout history searching for quick, easy, tooth-whitening options. As time has progressed, there are more opportunities than ever to bring white teeth to the masses.

It has been reported that in 3000 BC, people started using a tool called a “chew stick” to clean their teeth. Essentially a small branch with one frayed end, they were used to rub teeth in order to scrape off residue. Some third world and developing countries still have citizens who choose to use chew sticks to this day.

From there, it’s thought that toothbrushes were first invented in China in 1498, with bristles that were made from hog hair. The toothbrush we use today was designed in the early 20th century after dentists promoted toothbrushes, but wanted to get rid of the hog hair.

The idea of using special products for teeth whitening, as opposed to teeth cleaning tools, was first introduced through teeth whitening toothpaste. Fluorides were first used in Italy as teeth whiteners in 1802, and have since led to plenty of different options pioneered by dentists that use fluoride to whiten teeth.

Now we’ve turned to many different options to keep our pearly whites shining. While some people choose to avoid foods and drinks that might stain teeth, others turn to further options.

Generally, modern teeth whitening options have been divided into two forms - bleaching gel and laser bleaching. Bleaching gel can often be used unsupervised at home and are available in strip form, trays or paints to apply to teeth.

Laser bleaching usually takes place at a dentist’s office, and should be performed by a professional. Usually those procedures take about an hour and can have marked results after one treatment. There are other whitening options offered at clinics including strong bleaches that should have medical supervision.

Teeth are often discoloured due to the weakening of the enamel over time, as well as bacterial pigments, food and tobacco use. For adults, discoloured teeth can be an embarrassment. That’s why teeth whitening has emerged as a popular cosmetic trend, which allows people to strive towards making their teeth look the way they desire.

However, if you are considering tooth whitening then many dentists would recommend that patients seek their advice before purchasing home bleaching kits. Once you have sought advice from professionals, you could be on your way to having those shiny pearly whites you’ve always wanted.

Major Breakthrough in Exercise and Diabetes

Are you Qualified and Following these training Guidelines?

Epidemiology/ Etiology

Normally the human body works like a smoothly operating food processor. It transforms foods into energy- energy necessary for activities of normal daily living and including exercise. The hormone insulin is a vitallog in the process, allowing sugars in the bloodstream to enter the muscles cells, where energy production occurs. In the diabetic this system does not operate properly , and the body is unable to convert sugars and startches from the diet into energy . Without adequate insulin in the blood , glucose accumulates in the bloodstream. This disorder often results in serious complications to nearly every organ in the body . There are two forms of diabetes:

1. Insulin dependent or Type I (IDDM), which affects children and young adults and is the more intensive version. It is characterized by reduction in the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin, and the person must have doses of insulin daily.

2. Non- insulin dependent or Type II (NIDDM) diabetes have fewer insulin receptor cells and an intracellular defect. It strikes mostly overweight and over 40-year -old adults. Type II diabetes is due largely to lifestyle, with obesity being the number one risk factor; it is well accepted that heredity is also a factor.

Studies of exercise performance indicate that, generally , exercise capacity is decreased while a diabetic is also metabolically less efficient than their non-diabetic counterpart. The good news is that the diabetic responds normally and appropriately to exercise training, thus proving beneficial by increasing physical work capacity, cardiovascular stability, self image, and lipid profile. Most importantly, exercise is associated with reduction in the insulin requirements necessary to achieve glucose control. Two other points need mentioning when discussing the benefits of regular physical activity:

1. An anti- obesity effect due to the increased caloric expenditure.

2. The satisfaction of being able to compete in a non-diabetic much inspiration to persevere.

Lastly, exercise is considered an important adjunct to diet in helping to lower complications associated with long term, uncontrolled diabetes by helping to reduce cholesterol, blood sugar, blood pressure, and body weight. For those individuals at risk for developing diabetes, a major study done at the University of California at Berkeley found that for every 500 calories expended during exercise, a person’s risk is cut by 6%.

Here are your 5 Training Guidelines

IDDm patients must carefully coordinate the dose and timing of insulin injections with the exercise program. Typically they should check BS 30 minutes before and 1 hour after exercise.

Review symptoms of hypoglycemia with the patient before the exercise session.

Keep a record of activity, BS reading and symptoms.

Know the medications of the diabetic , especially as they impact HR and BP.

For IDDM insulin should be injected away from exercise muscle, preferably in the abdominal region. The injection should occur at least one hour before exercising.

I hope you enjoy and take this information to heart. Have a happy and healthy day!

Sincerely Yours,

Natalie Pyles

Migraine Headache - How Do You Know It’s a Migraine?

Migraine headaches can be so severe that you may be unable to function. They are usually very painful headaches. Other symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and extreme light and sound sensitivity, may also be present. Migraines can be so intense that you are not able to do anything for hours and sometimes even for days.

Through the years, the treatment of migraines has improved.

So, how can your tell if you are having a migraine?

You can usually tell if you have a migraine because one or more symptoms will be present. These symptoms will typically involve moderate to severe pain on one side of the head. You should know that it is possible to have migraine pain on both sides of the head, however. The associated pain usually throbs or pulsates. The pain will usually intensify with any sort of physical activity. Your regular daily activities will be interrupted because of the pain. You may feel nauseated and may or may not vomit. Any light or sound may bother you.

If you do nothing about the migraine headache it can last between 4 hours - 72 hours. Some fortunate individuals will have a migraine attack only once or twice for the year. Others, who are not so lucky, can have an attack monthly or even several times for the month.

Some people will have a migraine with auras. Others will not experience this. Those who experience auras before having a migraine usually notice that it happens anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes before the headache start.

An aura is usually different for each individual. Some say it is like sparkling flashes of light, or dazzling zigzag lines entering your peripheral vision. Some people experience a slow spreading blind spot across their field of vision. An arm or a leg may start to feel a tingling, or a feeling of pins and needles. It is rare for a person experiencing auras to become weak or to lose their speech.

Some individuals believe that can tell when they are about to have a migraine attack. They say they have a sort of premonition. Many experience feelings of joy and an intense energy. Some crave sweets, while others become thirsty. There are even some people who become irritable and slip into a type of depression just before a migraine. However, this is not the norm. Many people will never experience a premonition or an aura.

Children can get migraines too, but they are usually shorter in duration. A dizzy or lightheaded feeling may also be brought on by the pain. Some people have all the common symptoms of a migraine without the actual headache. You should schedule an appointment with your medical professional if you are experiencing frequent headaches. They can tell you what is wrong and what you should do to make it better.
